The first high-performance carbon fiber was created by Dr. Roger Bacon, a physicist and materials scientist at the Parma Technical Center, in 1958. The material created by Bacon consisted mainly of thin filaments of graphite arranged in sheets or rolls, sheets extending continuously along the entire length of the filament of graphite. After developing the carbon fiber, Bacon estimated the cost of production of high performance fibers "10 million dollars per pound." The material created by Bacon represented a discovery of great importance at that time, scientists and industrialists were determined to find a method for efficient production and less expensive. On January 14, 1969 Carr Reinforcements produced the first carbon fiber fabric esistende the world. The carbon fiber is composed of thin filaments of carbon combined or arranged according to the classical scheme of the warp and texture to form an actual textile similar to what is done with the glass fibers. It 'is used to create articles by the use of molds and impregnating with appropriate resins (thus dividing a composite material) that confer rigidity as a result of a heat treatment. These products offer a great lightness and strength and are widely used where these features outweigh the cost. The characteristics of these products also are the good thermal insulation, dimensional stability compared to the thermal variations, chemical resistance and good fire retardant properties. The value of these characteristics is highly dependent on combinations of various types of carbon fiber and resin used. |
